Yesterday morning, a handgun was found inside of the backpack of a 7-year-old at a Far Rockaway school. Authorities say the .22-calibre was discovered around 8 a.m. at Wave Prepatory Elementary School and Lindsey Christ of NY1 reported that the gun belonged to the boy's mother, but his older brother put it inside of his bag. The gun was loaded.
According to NBC New York, his mother returned to the school after dropping him off to allegedly take him to a doctor's appointment. The school was locked down while police investigated the matter, and the Department of Education issued a statement on the incident:
“A gun was found in the book bag of a second grade student. The gun was confiscated. NYPD, School Safety were on site. Parent of the student was notified.”
53-year-old Deborah Farley was arrested yesterday after police blamed her for letting her son, Tyler, bring the weapon to school. Farley insists that she didn't know the gun was in her son's bag, and was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, endangering the weapon of a child and unlawful possession of a weapon.
