Jason Kilar, the CEO of Hulu who has led the company since its founding in 2007, will leave his post in the first quarter of this year. Kilar, 41, announced the news in a blog post.

"I’ve been so fortunate to play a role in this amazing, ongoing journey," he writes. "My decision to depart has been one of the toughest I’ve ever made."

Rich Tom, the company's Chief Technology Officer, will also depart around the same time. It is unclear what the two men plan to do next.

Kilar's exit from Hulu is not a surprise, although its timing is sudden. The former Amazon exec has been rumored to be on his way out for literally years, and has occasionally chafed at the restrictions placed on Hulu by its owners: Disney, News Corp and NBCUniversal. In a statement, Disney CEO Bob Iger had only positive things to say.

“Jason has been an integral part of the Hulu story, transforming it from an interesting idea into an innovative business model that continues to evolve," he said. "We are proud of his achievements, we appreciate what he’s built, and we share his confidence in his team’s ability to drive Hulu forward from here.”

It will be exciting to see Kilar, Tom and Hulu's next moves
