In a year where blockbuster movies brought audiences into theaters in droves, there were still plenty of people downloading their favorite films in an attempt to get around the high ticket prices and sticky floors of the local multiplex. And now Torrent Freak has tallied up the 10 most pirated movies of 2012, which served up very few surprises, other than the fact that Project X turned out to be the most downloaded movie of the year.

The film was downloaded a stunning 8.72 million times, beating out Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (8.5 million), The Dark Knight Rises (8.23 million), The Avengers (8.11 million), and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (7.85 million). This number is surprising given that Project X didn't create much of a buzz when it was released, but that didn't stop people from downloading it by the millions.

Part of that might have to do with the fact that the film was marketed towards high school and college kids, who historically have little disposable income, but are also well-versed in the ways of the internet. Also, being that it was a comedy, there was no additional pull for audiences to want to see million-dollar special effects on the big screen, in 3D, or in IMAX like some of the others on the list.
