The Pokemon Company International announced today that for the first time ever, players will be able to earn a spot in the 2013 Video Game Championship Pokemon tournament series by participating in Wi-Fi tournaments in Pokemon Black 2 and White 2's Global Battle Union.

The first Wi-Fi tournament is going down from Dec. 13-17, and the top players will earn byes at live tournaments starting with January's Winter Regional Championships. They'll also receive "Championship Points," which can help them earn a spot at the 2013 Pokemon World Championships in Vancouver.

This marks the first time that results from Wi-Fi battles will be counted in the official Pokemon tourney season, making it easier than ever to earn a competitive spot. Head to the Global Link site if you want to sign up.

More Wi-Fi events will be held throughout next year, so keep an eye out for official announcements.
