If you're a science fiction nerd and haven't read John Scalzi's Old Man's War series or Redshirts, you are doing yourself a massive disservice.

So when we checked our in-boxes this morning and discovered that John Scalzi is teaming up with the former head of Halo-creator Bungie, to create a new mobile FPS, well, nerd-overload right there.

Morningstar is being developed by Industrial Toys and hopes to completely re-imagine what a shooter is capable of on mobile devices, while delivering a richly inhabited sci-fi narrative. We know that sounds like what everyone says about their titles, but the addition of a venerated science fiction author to the mix has us paying attention.

"The idea is to re-imagine what a first-person shooter can be on mobile," Industrial Toys co-founder Tim Harris told Polygon. "None of this porting type of thing. Even though our team is a mix of console and mobile developers, and comic book artists and writers, the way we are approaching this is from the ground up for touch."

Powered by the Unreal Engine, the games takes place in the year 2132 and opens with the discovery of an alien transmission coming from Saturn's moon, Titan. You are part of the first response team, and, uh, accidentally incinerate the Earth, and everyone living on it. You accidentally activate an alien artifact, a time machine, and spend the rest of the game trying to reverse your mistakes.

"With Morning Star, we're looking to change expectations for what kind of experience core gamers get from their mobile devices," said Industrial Toys CEO Alex Seropian. "We're breaking new ground on everything from the visuals to the story to the ongoing support we'll provide in the way of content, events and player involvement. It's gonna be nuts."

Watch the trailer and let us know what you think. This all sounds pretty damn rad to us.
