Wednesday night's murder of a 40-year-old man brought the Chicago Police Department's official homicide total for the year to 500. Nathaniel T. Jackson  was shot in the head while standing in front of a convenience store in the West Side's Austin neighborhood.

Though murders have dropped significantly over the past decade, this marks the first time since 2008 the city's homicide total has topped 500. It's also just the second time since 2003 that the murder total has exceeded 500. According to the Chicago Tribune, homicides have increased by 17 percent and shooting are up by 11 percent.
