A Florida woman has been accused of using her 1-year-old son as a shield as she tried to escape police custody. 27-year-old Shanika Mathieu was caught trying to steal baby shoes last Friday by loss prevention officers. When police arrived, they found Mathieu on her knees in the loss prevention office, holding her baby while screaming and crying for police not to arrest her.
The loss prevention officers told police that they saw Mathieu with the $34 shoes in her purse. When they took her to the office, she reportedly tried to flee, using her son as a human shield. It didn't stop them—she was arrested and taken to jail. Mathieu was charged with cruelty toward a child, larceny, battery, and shoplifting.
