Cheater: South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford
Date Of Affair: 2008 - Present
You can almost imagine the movie. Greg Kinnear plays a governor down south who one fateful day meets a captivating Argentine journalist (Penelope Cruz would probably kill in the role) and for the next seven years a long-distance friendship via email develops until finally they make passionate love during a business-related trip to the reporter's homeland. The Gov spends the next year going crazy thinking about this wonderful woman, so one day he just ups and leaves his job as head of state and just disappears for six days, going back to Argentina to proclaim his love to his "soul mate" while the country wonders where the hell he is. The only thing about this story, though, is that it ain't a sappy romcom. It actually happened.
In June 2009, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, who had already began a trial separation from his wife, hopped on a plane to visit his the woman of his dreams, sophisticated commodity broker Maria Belen Chapur, an educated divorced mother of two and former journalist fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, English, and Chinese, and also apparently a tennis enthusiast. Even if you wanna hate, you sorta have to give it up to these two.
