At the recent Metal Gear anniversary party in Tokyo, series creator Hideo Kojima announced that a movie version of the popular video game franchise is now in the works, according to Famitsu (via Digital Spy). The movie will come out through Columbia Pictures, and it will be produced by Avi Arad, who was one of the men behind bringing Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and The Amazing Spider-Man to the big screen.

Arad called video games the “comic books of today” and promised to stay true to the tone and flavor of the franchise. Obviously there is no word yet on which Metal Gear installment the movie would be based off of, but for years a straight-up adaptation of 1998's Metal Gear Solid was being worked on in Hollywood. It's not certain if that is still the plan, but we’ll have more on this story as it develops.
