Even back in the 1950s, A-list actors were getting their starts in horror flicks. In Steve McQueen’s case, the future Bullitt star jumped his career off with a headlining role in The Blob, a goofy but monster movie about a huge, gooey pink mass engulfing townsfolk left and right. So what if it’s basically Attack of the Killer Jell-O? It’s a lot of fun.

The 1988 remake, on the other hand, is a ghastlier experience. Co-written by Frank Darabont (of The Shawshank Redemption and AMC’s The Walking Dead fame), director Chuck Russell’s The Blob is darker than its forbearer, particularly in its horrid imagery, like a guy getting sucked into a sink’s drain, or little kids dying viciously.
