The original iPad—and the two models that followed—was a triumph of form and industrial design. But it didn't start out that way. The folks over at BuzzFeed got their hands on some images of an iPad prototype built between 2002 and 2004 placed side-by-side with the iPad 2. And, wow. Seeing the two together is like seeing Rick Ross standing next to Maybach O. The iPad prototype #035 was nearly an inch thicker than the last-gen iPad. It also had a much larger display and a plastic back.

Imagine if the iPad was really that big. Would it still be a success?
