When Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns hit shelves in 1986, it completely changed the way the public thought about Batman. For the first time ever, this was a Batman comic that was aimed exclusively at adults, rather than children. The book centered on an older Bruce Wayne returning as Batman after years of retirement to take Gotham City back from a vicious gang called The Mutants.

Now this watershed graphic novel is set to become the subject of a direct-to-DVD animated movie from Warner Brothers. Starring the voice of Peter Weller as Batman, the debut trailer for this film perfectly captures Miller’s work. The gritty tone and feel is here as we get glimpses of Batman’s violent battle against the mutant leader and his partnership with the new female Robin, who is voiced by Ariel Winter.

The movie will be split up into two parts, so there are plenty of characters from the original that aren’t introduced to us quite yet in this trailer. But for fans looking to get their Batman fix now that the Christopher Nolan films are over, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 1 should be perfect for you.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 will hit stores on September 25. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 2 should be in stores in early 2013.
