Barnes & Noble kicked off a new experiment in eReading this morning with the announcement of Nook for Web, a browser-based reader that brings the full catalogue of eBooks available in the Nook library to any Internet-ready Mac or PC.

Nook for the Web works in IE9, Firefox, Chrome or Safari via HTML 5 and doesn't require any add-ons or downloads. You just click on a "Read Instantly" icon in the Nook store and a clean, easily scrollable interface opens up in a new window complete with chapter navigation. It even syncs with your physical Nook eReader, so if you're reading a book on one platform, you can pick up where you left off on another.

To promote the service, B&N is offering one of six popular eBooks for free in Nook for the Web. Give the service a try for yourself here.
