Looking to capitalize off of the success of 2011's The Muppets, 20th Century Fox is moving ahead with a big screen adaptation of Sesame Street, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The site is reporting that longtime writer of the show, Joey Mazzarino, will pen the script, and Shawn Levy (Real Steel) will produce the film.
There have been two previous Sesame Street movies, 1985’s Follow That Bird and 1999’s The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland, which were both aimed solely at children. It remains to be seen if the studio is looking to make this movie just for kids again, or if it will follow in the footsteps of The Muppets and appeal to all audiences. But the inclusion of Levy leads us to believe that the latter will take place.
Fox has so far refused to comment on the story.
