The Gears of War: Judgment team has been consulting with Pixar, the animation studio behind Brave and the Toy Story trilogy. The studio is specifically looking to Pixar for help with cultivating a better story and enhancing the game's characters, Director of Production Rod Fergusson told Game Informer.

Members of the Judgment team attended a one-day workshop with a story director from Pixar to learn about details of storytelling like tying a character's real-world decisions to core emotional traits and using characters to make a more engaging story arc.

"We've been trying to improve on storytelling since we started," said Fergusson. "And this seemed like a natural way of getting a little bit of insight into how what we consider to be the best in the industry."

The fourth entry in the franchise, Gears of War: Judgment is first game to deviate from the series' main story arc. The game takes place before the events of the original Gears of War, focusing on supporting characters Damon Baird and Augustus "The Cole Train" Cole. Judgment is also being developed by a new team, Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly.
