Rumor has it that Sony was at one point considering making the PlayStation 4, their inevitable (though unannounced) follow-up to the PS3, a download-only console. That means it would ship to consumers without an optical drive, and trying to jam a Blu-ray disc into it would be as effective as doing the same to your dog's ass.

Because the PSPgo did so well.

Sony ultimately decided that this was probably not that great an idea. Considering how hard they worked to make Blu-ray the current standard for disc-based media, we're guessing there would be a lot of unhappy customers and consumers if Sony went all-digital, despite the success of the PlayStation Network.

In other news, the next Sony gaming console could drop the PlayStation branding entirely and just be called "Orbis".

What role will digital distribution play in the future of the gaming industry? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter.
