52-year-old Mary Jamis was arrested alongside a heterosexual friend on Thursday for attempting to secure a marriage license in Winston-Salem, N.C. Of course the big news out of the state this week was the passage of Amendment One, which prohibits not only gay marriages, but also any type of civil union.

Jamis and her friend were joined by several other gay couples as part of a protest. According to the Associated Press, a county administrator attempted to coax Jamis and her friend to leave, but they stated they would remain unless a marriage license was issued for her Jamis and her partner, 48-year-old Starr Johnson.

When they refused to leave, half-a-dozen female officers swarmed in and arrested them. Jamis and her friend were charged with second-degree trespass, and released without bond.
