Screw the underwhelming box office performance numbers. Grindhouse, the crazily ambitious double-feature from Robert Rodriguez (responsible for the gory zombie romp Planet Terror) and Quentin Tarantino (he of the women-in-danger, car chase hybrid Death Proof), never stood a chance with mainstream audiences. A pure, uncompromised flashback to old-school exploitation films mostly seen in trashy cinemas, Grindhouse catered to a very specific kind of moviegoer: One who'd choose Herschell Gordon Lewis over Joseph Gordon-Levitt any day. As far as in-theater experiences are concerned, nothing has topped Grindhouse's four-hour ride since its release.
