18. A HEARTBREAKING WORK OF STAGGERING GENIUS, BY DAVE EGGERS (2000)
Status: Not in development
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is the somewhat fictionalized story of Dave Eggers, who had to raise his youngest brother by himself after both of their parents died unexpectedly at a young age. It’s an emotional portrayal of strength and resolve in a world that has seemingly turned its back on this splintered family.
The rights have been purchased by studios in the past, but nothing has ever come of it. This would make for a beautiful movie, especially if it’s written by Eggers himself, who is currently a screenwriter in Hollywood with scripts like Away We Go and Where the Wild Things Are under his belt. This could be so much more than emotional Oscar bait; it is a memoir about a family that had to overcome the type of adversity that sometimes gets overlooked in our world.
