Why we’re excited: There’s never any mistaking the fact that you’re watching a movie or TV show written by Aaron Sorkin, and HBO’s The Newsroom, set within a fictional cable news channel’s set and offices, has his name written all over it. The recent Academy Award winner (taking home the prize for his whip-smart The Social Network screenplay) is Hollywood’s go-to scribe for snappy, intelligent, and briskly paced dialogue, usually, if not always, centered around interoffice politics or suit-and-tie business dealings (or, in the case of The Social Network, sandal-and-hoody business matters)—most recently, he co-wrote the behind-the-scenes baseball drama Moneyball.

The Newsroom, created by Sorkin, will no doubt be as talky and smart as his Emmy-winning series The West Wing, and with its diverse, laudable cast (including Jeff Daniels, Shutter Island’s Emily Mortimer, Slumdog Millionaire’s Dev Patel, and Olivia Munn), expect HBO’s most prestigious new series to dominate all highbrow water-cooler conversations.
