Google Will Protest SOPA Tomorrow, Too

The Internet giant joins the resistance.

Google will be joining Wikipedia, Reddit and many other influential websites in protesting the proposed SOPA law in congress tomorrow (Wednesday), the company announced. The search giant will stop short of blacking out its website (thankfully) as some others are doing, however, instead placing a link to information about why it opposes the law in a prominent position on its home page.

SOPA, which stands for Stop Online Piracy Act, could potentially hold websites liable for even carrying links to other websites that host copyrighted content. Debate over the bill— and its correspondent in the senate, known as PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act)— is ongoing in congress.

In a statement, a representative from Google said the following:

"Like many businesses, entrepreneurs, and Web users, we oppose these bills because there are smart, targeted ways to shut down foreign rogue Web sites without asking American companies to censor the Internet. So tomorrow we will be joining many other tech companies to highlight this issue on our U.S. home page."
