Scour Inc. (AKA Scour Exchange)

Shut down: Nov. 16, 2000

Founded by five UCLA Computer Science students, Scour was birthed as a multimedia search engine, which developed a side venture called Exchange—a file exchange service that offered audio files, software, videos, and images. Built to compete with Napster, the project folded as the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) and several other trade associations filed a lawsuit against the site for breaking copyright infringement laws. Scour declared bankruptcy soon after.
