3DS Sells 4 Million in US, Getting "Pokemon" and "Mario Party" Titles

Is anyone surprised by this?

None

Along with Nintendo's announcement that the 3DS has sold 4 million units in the US, matching its Japanese sales, comes the news that the system will be host to new games in the Mario Party and Pokemon series. If the success of Mario Party 7 and Super Mario Land 3D are any indicator of how first-party Nintendo games will perform on the handheld, the games will be sure to delight.

Keep in mind, this new Pokemon game is different from the one revealed last month that crosses the series with a Japanese strategy RPG. We'd be willing to bet it's Pokemon Grey, but no details on that or the new Mario Party (9? 10? What number are they even on?) are yet available.

Should Nintendo continue to rely on first party titles, or should they nurture third party developers to perform better on the 3DS? Any predictions for when new Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, Kirby, and Donkey Kong titles will appear? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter.

Update: Nintendo's contacted us to let us know that the 3DS will in fact not be receiving Mario Party or Pokemon games any time soon, and that their original statement may have been slightly confusing. We'd like to add that that doesn't mean the system will never host those titles, so we'll keep you posted when they do get announced.
