19. Shelsky's Smoked Fish
Neighborhood: Cobble Hill, Brooklyn
Address: 251 Smith St.
Left to my own devices I would eat like my grandfather, happily subsisting on a malodorous diet of raw turnips, garlicky pickles, strong cured fish, and gin. So it follows that I was delighted when this tidy little appetizing shop opened its doors in my neighborhood this year. Come for gravlax and sable, sturgeon and kippered herring, golden chubs, Kossar's bialys and a dizzying spread of shmears. Then swing by my place for breakfast.—JR
