22. The Queens Kickshaw

Queens has a rep as the borough of ethnic eats, and it's well worth hunting down Chinese in Flushing, Indian in Jackson Heights, Greek in Astoria, and so on. But it was nice to see the borough expand its repertoire even further this year with everyday hangs like Queens Kickshaw, which is entirely devoted to two things: good coffee and grilled-cheese sandwiches. Even though they brew Coffee Labs Roasters with fancypants tools like Hario V60 drip cones and a La Marzocco Strada espresso machine, they dispense with the shitty attitude that has made baristas objects of scorn elsewhere. And you can't really go wrong with their sandwich combos, like a gooey cheddar-and-mozzarella number served with homemade tomato soup.—CS
