We've been looking forward to the next game in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series of post-apocalyptic shooters for a while, but it looks like our hopes for the game are going to remain unfulfilled. From a Google translation of Ukrainian News comes word that Russian developer GSC Game World is shutting down for good, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has been cancelled.

It's not clear yet what's caused the studio to close, and this should be considered unsubstantiated until we hear from the developers themselves. We can glean from the article, however, that development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 wasn't going well.

We only hope that they're pulling a Good Old Games and pretending to shut down to drum up publicity, or the Ukranian News has simply got their facts mixed up. We'll update this post with confirmation or refutal if and when it arrives. For now, let us know your thoughts in the comments or on Facebook or Twitter. Were you looking forward to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 or could you not care less about this?
