One of the biggest criticisms about the iPhone 4S upon its announcement has been its lack of 4G-compatibility. Apple claimed a strain on battery life as a primary reason for withholding the technology, yet most folks who’ve gotten their hands on the new devices have been disappointed to find their battery lives still suffer, despite the advertised specs. A user over at iDownloadBlog looks to have pinpointed the problem and therefore found a fix.

According to the user, the issue lies with iOS 5’s ability to automatically update its time zone, which forces the device to constantly ping different location servers. Toggling the “System Time Zone” feature off within the “System Services” subsection under “Location Services” in “Settings” may very well extend your iPhone 4S’s battery life. And because the feature is found across iOS 5, any device running the new software may stand to benefit.
