In its Q3 earnings report today, Samsung said it sold a whopping 28 million smartphones last quarter, surging over 400 percent from the same time last year, and besting former top dog Apple by over 10 million units.
Samsung was buoyed by the continued success of its Galaxy S line of phones in addition to other new offerings like the Droid Charge and Infuse 4G. Apple, which sold a less than expected 17 million iPhones last quarter, was hurt by widespread expectations for the new iPhone, which prevented consumers from buying older models.
Phone sales accounted for about 60 percent of profits for Samsung, which is the world's largest technology company by revenue.
