July 2011 Video Game Sales Worst Since 2006

When an 8 month old game takes third place in sales, you're in trouble.

None

When NCAA Football 12, Cars 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops (which released 8 months ago) are your top three best-selling games for the month, you know things look bleak.  In fact, according to NPD, July was the worst month in video game sales since October 2006! The worst year over year slump was console hardware, though we don’t have details or specifics on the number of units sold.  On the software side, there really weren’t any major titles released.  NCAA Football 12 undoubtedly did well as a result of the NFL lockout, which caused Madden NFL 12 to be delayed.  The wacky and sexy Catherine is selling very well, but it was released at the end of the month, so it didn’t rank in the top ten.  We still think that video game software sales are going to make a huge comeback in the latter half of this year.  With titles like Batman: Arkham City, Skyrim, CoD: Modern Warfare 3 and Saints Row: The Third how can it not?
