Holt McCallany has gravitated toward high-profile movies in a major way since his slept-on FX show Lights Out was canceled earlier this year, after only one season. After already landing a role in the upcoming Sylvester Stallone/Walter Hill pic, he's now boarded The Gangster Squad, one of the biggest studio dramas in the works right now.

The film, based on a series of articles in the Los Angeles Times by Paul Lieberman, finds the former TV pugilist playing a bodyguard and enforcer for Sean Penn's Mickey Cohen character. Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, Bryan Cranston, Michael Pena, and Giovanni Ribisiall also star in the high profile true crime film about a specialized L.A.P.D. unit that must stop Cohen's growing influence in the City of Angels.

Production is scheduled to begin in late summer, with 30 Minutes or Less director Ruben Fleischer behind the camera. There's still no release date announced, yet, but look for it to drop sometime next year.
