With less restrictions than Apple’s iOS and other competitors, Android is the easiest mobile OS for app development. Thus, Microsoft is looking to capitalize on that fact with a new API mapping tool that allows developers to port existing Android apps to the Windows Phone 7 OS.
The tool unfortunately isn’t a magic fix that automatically ports the apps, instead requiring a fair bit of effort—it provides developers with a list of API mappings that act as a guide in the porting process. Think being given a translation dictionary and still having to write an essay. Similar tools should be available when MS’s Mango OS releases in the fall.
In all, it’s just another small step—following big ones such as their partnership with Nokia—in Microsoft’s bid to surpass the market share of iOS.
