Who runs the social networks? One girl: Lady Gaga. Not only does the Mother Monster have over 10 million Twitter followers, she holds the distinction of being the first living person to amass more than 10 million Facebook fans. So it's not surprising to hear that Gaga has plans to be involved in the development side of the social networking world. Along with Google's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, Gaga will be investing in Backplane, a social network for celebrities.

Founded by Lady Gaga's manager, Troy Carter, Backplane will reportedly "blend technology and entertainment and plans to provide a venue for online communities by combining brands' various social media presences into one platform." Whatever that means. Schmidt's investment fund, Tomorrow Ventures, is leading the first investment round which has brought in over $1 million. Gaga is said to hold a 20% stake in the company.

Backplane is set to launch sometime this month.
