The Google Doodle team has been on a hot streak lately, serving up animations that go above and beyond what most people would expect from doodles on the homepage of a search engine. Today is no different, as Google has outdone itself by turning to a world-renowned pop artist to craft a custom illustration. Takashi Murakami, the Japanese maximalist who found a new audience by designing the artwork for Kanye West's 2008 album Graduation, is responsible for today's doodle.
Murakami created two designs in honor of both the summer and winter equinoxes. Today is the summer equinox, which is the longest day of the year and marks the official beginning of the summer season.
Of course Murakami's distinct anime-influenced style has often popped up in other high profile collaborations in the past-- the artist is famously responsible for Louis Vuitton's iconic all-over print patterns.
