It looks like director Antoine Fuqua is now more interested in working with a living hip-hop legend over a deceased one. The Training Day director was set to helm a biopic about Tupac Shakur, but today comes word that he's circling Southpaw, a boxing drama which has Eminem attached to star.

The script, written by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, tells the tale of a welterweight champ who punches his way back to glory after a tragedy. Sutter says this project is a "metaphorical narrative of the second chapter of [Eminem's] life" instead of a literal continuation of the Curtis Hanson directed8 Mile story.

The 24 Frames report makes no mention as to why Fuqua decided to depart from the 2Pac project and is quick to point out that no formal announcement regarding Southpaw has been released as of yet. The usually prolific director hasn't made a movie since helming 2009's cop crime film ensemble Brooklyn's Finest.
