8. EVAN RACHEL WOOD AS MELODY IN WHATEVER WORKS (2009)

How can you ensure that every frame of a film is going to be a nervous, phobic spectacle without a hint of sanity? Cast Larry David as the lead in a movie that was written by Woody Allen. These two men have a combined therapy bill higher than Nick Nolte’s bar tab. Fortunately, the lovely Evan Rachel Wood saves Whatever Works from becoming the celluloid equivalent of an anxiety attack.

Playing a rather naïve country girl named Melody, she begins to develop a crush on David’s character, Boris. And, of course, Boris is heavily based on Allen’s own persona. This is yet another way for Allen to put his sexual fantasies on screen for the world to see. Nonetheless, Wood’s perky demeanor and grit-fueled country girl personality is a welcome change of pace from watching Larry David be awkward at all turns.
