It’s a phone! It’s a PSP! It’s both! Yes, Sony Ericsson’s Xperia PLAY cell phone is both cell phone and gaming system, and for once that's not just marketing spiel. Like the ill-fated PSP Go, it slides up to reveal a control pad and touch analog controls. Does it work? Well, sort of—but more on that later.

Besides, whether it works isn't the point. The point is that the PLAY’s release this week proves that mobile gaming isn’t some businessman-playing-Angry-Birds fad. We were already occasionally confusing our cell phones with our DualShocks, and now? Clearly, portable gaming is here to stay. But like all six titles we unearthed in our new monthly look at mobile gaming, it’s full of good and bad. Just like your Internet browsing history.
