Live Show Alert: Gruff Rhys in L.A. Wednesday (6/1)

A Welsh musician with more aliases and side projects than MF DOOM.

So you haven’t heard of Super Furry Animals, the brain-melting, genre-defying group from Wales that's known to match blast beats with tender acoustic ballads and put DJ booths into actual DayGlo-painted tanks on stage? That’s probably expected—they saddle so many styles that it’s hard for anyone to pin them down.

Their singer, Gruff Rhys, is a fairly busy solo artist as well, having collaborated with producer Boom Bip on a project called Neon Neon a few years ago. He’s got a new solo record, Hotel Shampoo, that melds his infectious vocal melodies with some pretty insane psychedelic production with mariachi horns, '60s fuzz bass, thudding drum samples and lots of reverb. One of the stranger products to come from the U.K. in a long time, and definitely worth the time.—Finn Cohen
