Dwayne Johnson To Play Charley Pride In New Biopic

Is he a little bit country or a little bit rock 'n' roll?

None

Dwayne Johnson's recent career choices (i.e., the hugely successful Fast Five) have kept him in the spotlight, but his latest role choice is an unexpected, and welcome, change of pace. The professional wrestler turned actor will play legendary black country musician Charley Pride in an upcoming biopic, which he'll also produce.

Originally, Terrence Howard and Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) were attached to star and direct, respectively, but their efforts fell to the wayside. Pride explains to the Telegraph Journal, "New management took over the studio that was ready to begin site work on it and a decision was made to put all their resources behind thrillers—fast actioners. They felt that was where the big box office money was then."

This project is a pretty big gear change for the action-heavy Johnson, and if you've seen his WWE singing antics before then you know The Rock has the charisma to pull off the story. But does he have the dramatic skills to do the film justice?
