4. BLACKEST NIGHT (2009-2010)

Writer: Geoff Johns
Artist: Ivan Reis

What it’s about: After the success of the Sinestro Corps War, Geoff Johns continued his Green Lantern run with Blackest Night. The story centered on all of the various Lantern Corps banding together to face-off against the threat of the Black Lanterns.

The Black Lantern's power is wielded by a long forgotten Green Lantern foe named Nekron, who is the embodiment of Death. Using these Black Lantern rings, Nekron creates a zombie-like army of long-dead heroes and villains to terrorize the other Lanterns and the rest of the DC Universe.

Why it's Earth shattering: Blackest Night made all of the DC heroes come face-to-face with dead companions, villains, and loved ones. It was creepy, violent, and also one of the best event books to come out this decade. The end of the series also saw the rebirth of many DC characters such as Aquaman, Captain Boomerang, and the Martian Manhunter.
