Tom Fec’s Tobacco moniker sprang out of music he was making on his own when he wasn’t touring with his other group, Black Moth Super Rainbow. If Dilla listened to a lot of the Melvins and Karlheinz Stockhausen, he’d probably make music like Tobacco—grinding bass, distorted drum samples, wailing synth lines.
His last release on Anticon, 2010’s Maniac Meat, is like trunk music for people wanting to terrify and confuse their neighborhood. There's boom to rattle the back windows and moments screaming for top-down cruising, but mostly this is scary-as-hell music. In the best way possible. —Finn Cohen
