Judging from everything we've heard, the Ryan Murphy-produced and written American Horror Story pilot is seriously effed up. Which means newly cast star Jessica Lange should be prepared to scare the living daylights out of fans for years to come—provided it gets a full-season pick-up.

Lange will play the "nosy neighbor" of Ben and Vivien (Connie Britton) in the pilot, a role that will be re-written by Murphy and co-producer/writer Brad Falchuk as a "third lead." The role of Ben has yet to be cast.

Precious little is known about the plot of Horror Story, beyond the fact that it's a horror story and tonally far away from Murphy's sunny work on Glee. It has been reported that if the show was picked up for future seasons, each year would feature a different cast of characters in a different situation. Perhaps that hook is what drew Lange—nominally known for her feature film work—to the small screen.
