Winter is still coming. Following the successful launch of Game of Thrones on Sunday night, HBO announced on Tuesday that the show had been picked up for a second season.

"We are delighted by the way David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have brought George R.R. Martin’s amazing book series to the screen, and thrilled by the support of the media and our viewers,” HBO president of programming Michael Lombardo said in a press release. "This is the continuation of an exciting creative partnership."

Great. Though this announcement begs the question: Why didn't HBO just renew Game of Thrones last week or last month? Does anyone actually believe this wasn't planned since Thrones was picked up for series? The ratings for the premiere were fairly decent (a little over 4 million people tuned in), but it's not like they swayed HBO to make this decision one way or another. It doesn't matter to Thrones fans, but sometimes pomp and circumstance seems a bit too pomp-y.
