Say hello to Hollywood's next female superstar. Jennifer Lawrence, coming off of her Academy Award-nominated performance in last year’s indie darling Winter’s Bone, has added yet another big get to her hot streak: She’s just landed the lead role in The Hunger Games, a franchise-in-the-making based on the hugely popular book series from author Suzanne Collins. Not bad for a girl first known as the daughter on The Bill Engvall Show. We didn't watch it, either.

The 20-year-old Lawrence beat out an ever-growing list of hopefuls for the part of Katniss, a young girl living in a futuristic world who signs up for a game of publicized and deadly survival. The books are basically Japan’s cult favorite 2000 flick Battle Royale for a much younger and more accessible audience. Along with Lawrence, other young actresses who tried to win the role included Saorise Ronan, Emily Browning (next seen in Sucker Punch), Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl in Kick-Ass), and True Grit’s Hailee Steinfeld.

The Hunger Games is slated for a March 23, 2012 release, with Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) on board to direct. As for Lawrence, the blonde beauty has X-Men: First Class on deck (June 3, to be exact), in which she’ll be seen as a young Mystique. Get used to her, folks. We’re guessing that won’t be a problem, though; just look at her. And she can act? Cot damn.
