The Silence of the Lambs gets all the credit, but Michael Mann's Manhunter is the film that first brought Hannibal Lecter to viewers everywhere. In Mann's film, Lecter is played by Brian Cox; admittedly, though, Hopkins gives the definitive performance. But the real strength of Manhunter lies in Mann's impeccable direction.

Mann is one of cinema's most underrated stylists, a filmmaker with an eye for composition and color. Manhunter foregrounds both of those attributes to create a film where each shot hums with energy. Though the film performed poorly upon its initial release, interest in Mann as an auteur prompted a reevaluation that finally saw the film getting the respect it deserves

Saturday, the director himself will be on hand to discuss the film following the screening. This is an opportunity too good to pass up. Now we just need to get a re-release of Heat and then we can all die happy.
