A pimp, a DJ, and an Italian tourist meet in a prison cell. Sounds like the beginning of a strange joke with a dirty punchline, but it’s actually a Jim Jarmusch film. Before he was dazzling audiences with the long close-ups of Broken Flowers or the challenging plot devices of The Limits of Control, Jarmusch managed to gather three wildly different actors (Roberto Benigni, Tom Waits, and Jon Lurie) for Down By Law, a quirky little film that has since become a cult classic. Set in New Orleans and shot in glorious black-and-white, Down by Law features three disparate characters who, for various reasons, end up in prison together and have to escape through the bayou. -Finn Cohen
