Some people say you can't go backwards to go forwards, but they haven't hung out with Simon West. Fourteen years ago, The Mechanic director was making his directorial debut with the Nicolas Cage action thriller Con Air and, according to his interview with Crave Online, he is going to try to convince his star to revisit the unfriendly skies.

"I'm going to put a bug in [Nicolas Cage's] ear about it," says West. "It's a matter of getting everybody together. If the two of us want to do it, we'll go after the others. There's so many people involved and its about getting everybody to agree. But it'd be great!"

In the wake 2010's The Expendables, another star-studded throwback action flick sounds fun, but is it likely that all the original players can be reassembled? Many of the big names from last time were killed (John MalkovichVing RhamesDanny TrejoDave Chappelle), so unless it's a prequel or these guys are coming back zombified, that just leaves Cage, John Cusack, Steve BuscemiMykelti Williamson, and Colm Meaney.

The million dollar question: Would The Marietta Mangler, the darkly humorous serial killer played by Boardwalk Empire's Buscemi, return in the sequel? He's really the only original character left who we give a shit about. Either way, it's all pipe dreams and a fanciful tale in West's mind at the moment. Complex will keep you posted if news of this goes any further. Share your ideas of what the Con Air 2 plot could potentially be in the comments section below.

West's The Mechanic is out this Friday.
