Director: Edgar Wright
Stars: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Anna Kendrick
Complex co-sign: For anyone who grew up with a Nintendo Entertainment System next to their bed, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a reverential and hilarious gift from the gods. Staying true to Scott O’Malley’s original comic book series, Edgar Wright’s highly stylized adaptation piles on the video game punctuations and kinetic energy. Cera basically plays a slightly cooler version of his standard “awkward overachiever” character, so it’s a good thing that the film’s supporting players hold things down, especially Culkin as the snarky best friend. Best of all, it’s a believable fantasy—who wouldn’t fight seven evil exes to power Mary Elizabeth Winstead up, no coins?
