Though you're free to button-mash to your heart's content—and indeed, that's one of the joys of the game—many combat sections will actually require puzzle solving. Certain enemies and shield substances can only be overcome with certain types of fire: gold substances require rapid-fire, for example, or sustained beams from stun tanks. We found ourselves up against a shielded enemy who could only be defeated by Force-stunning an enemy with a laser gun, then spinning them around so they took out the shield for us. Not only that, but during some combat sections, you're given access to a base of resources from which you can built new vehicles and weapons to take out the defenses of whoever you're up against. Not to simplify, but it's like the LEGO version of Starcraft. And we mean that in a good way.
