With Leno's primetime ratings suffering, NBC devised a plan to bring him back to familiar territory. This plan required Conan to bump The Tonight Show to 12:05 a.m., essentially the "next-day show", the red-haired fellow refused. Long story short, NBC gave Tonight back to Leno; Conan and staff got a $45 million severance package. Only time will tell if it was a smart move, but Late Night TV will definitely never be the same.
