The Neighbourhood

The Neighbourhood just released their self-titled album, their third studio album since the California band first started picking up momentum in 2012. Musically, the band has come a long way. They're constantly evolving without following trends or bending their own ideals to fit in, and they've managed to grow without alienating their fan base.

At the same time, they've also earned a reputation for being ahead of the curve not just as a band, but as tastemakers. The group stays up to date on new music and has hand-picked some amazing talent for supporting roles on tour, collaborations, and remixes. They enlisted Brockhampton, Travis Scott, and The 1975 on their first US tours as support, brought out HEALTH on their spring dates, and collaborated with YG, Danny Seth, Dej Loaf, G-Eazy, Raury, and more on their 2014 mixtape. On top of that, Alessia Cara got noticed through her YouTube cover of The Neighbourhood's "Sweater Weather," Billie Eilish's first ever show was The Neighbourhood, and 21 Pilots and Halsey are both fans.

When The Neighbourhood's lead singer Jesse Rutherford came in for an episode of Trending Topics, we talked about some of his new favorites, and today we're taking a deeper dive into the whole band's tastes. Here are some of the artists they personally fuck with, plus a little about what draws them to each of these acts. Check it out, then go listen to The Neighbourhood's new album.

"One of my favorite new bands coming out of Los Angeles right now. they have a really unique sound that blends pop, soul, and funk in a way I haven't heard before. I had the pleasure of the working with them on the new stuff they're putting out later this year. Very excited for people to hear it."—Brandon

"This dude has tooooo much talent. His record IWASVERYBAD has me in it from the second it starts til the minute it ends. It takes you through a full emotional cycle. I laughed at moments & I cried during ‘Black Sheep, White Dove.’ He’s got something to say but not in a preachy way. He’s always in the pocket. This dude will be one of the top dogs in no time."—Jesse

Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Unknown Mortal Orchestra

"I've been listening to this band since their first project. Their unique drum tones were the first thing to catch my ear. They push the genre of 'indie rock' to places that no one else is doing right now. Excited to hear what they are going to bring for the future."—Mikey

The Marias

The Marias

"The Marias are an interesting band and brand new with one EP out. My favorite part of this band is their reduced and specific production. Everything has its place in function as well as frequency/dynamics. Not too many frills or things to 'fill up' these tracks. I can hear through these recordings at least one person in the studio repeatedly saying 'less is more' and I like it."—Jeremy

"A new artist who I’ve recently really started getting into. I love the way he utilize hip-hop elements like break beats drums with lo-fi boom bap production. I’m pretty sure he’s from France and you can really tell in his music that it has an effect on his sound. To me all those elements together make for really unique music."—Zach

Field Medic

"Field medic has found interesting ways through his production and lyrics to give traditional-ish folk some relevance in todays musical landscape. At the heart of it, it's well written songs that remind me of artist like Dylan and townes Van Zandt. Which is a necessity, no doubt, but I think its clear today that the song doesn't always win. And Kevin adopts to that reality well with his a boombox that shows a pentagram sharpied on it as well as his web weaving capabilities."—Jeremy

"My old roommate introduced me to this band last year, and I haven't stopped listening since. They just dropped a new album earlier this year called the House, that I've probably already listened to 100 times. Always on when I'm driving. The singer Aaron is a melody master, and I absolutely love all the drums he made for this record. Perfect tone."—Brandon

Turnstile

Turnstile

"I grew up playing in hardcore bands and to be honest I have abandoned that genre pretty heavily. I’ve tried going back & listening to stuff I used to swear by & not felt the same way I remembered but Turnstile lets me reminisce while also finding a new love & hope for the future of the band. They make me excited to play in a band in 2018. 'Generator' & 'I Don’t Wanna Be Blind' are my current favorites off this record but the whole thing is automatic upon first listen. Perfect duration too."—Jesse

HEALTH

HEALTH

"Another new one I’ve recently started getting into. They combine so many different elements of music that I really enjoy. For an electronic band they almost sound like a heavy metal band combining crazy industrial sounding synths and big sounding electric drums. When you’re at a HEALTH show I’m never really sure whether to head bang to it or dance to it, they walk a very fine line of what type of music they’re and to me as a listener it’s very interesting and fun to experience."—Zach
